What are Sanctions and PEPs?
Sanctions are Entities or Physical individuals who are involved in or suspected of being engaged in illegal activities. Government bodies and financial authorities members of the OCDE issue sanctions lists; these can be used to screen individuals and organizations for financial sanctions.
A PEP is a Politically Exposed Person, is an Individual who holds a prominent position in public life for example a member of a political party, government official or law enforcement making them more vulnerable to bribery and corruption.
Sanctions and PEP screenings are a central component of any Bank or Financial Institution AML check as they confirm that such clients doesn’t present a money laundering risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are financial sanctions?
Financial sanctions are legal restrictions, put in place by the governments or Financial Authorities to limit or prevent entirely trading of individuals, entities or in some cases whole countries. They are usually levied against people or corporations who have committed financial crimes, and fall into one of three categories: the freezing of assets, specific restrictions on financial markets and orders to cease all trading.
Used by financial authorities and governments all over the world, sanctions lists are databases which detail individuals or entities that are “Blocked” from engaging in commercial activities. For instance the United Nations list is part of the GFIEN consolidated sanction list.
Which sanctions are included in the GFIEN sanctions list?
We use the UN, the OFAC, UK and other consolidated list, which are the most widely used official list of financial sanctions. These include the following: targeted asset freezes, financial restrictions and directions to cease all business.
Which countries are subject to sanctions?
Each country will be legally obliged to adhere to any financial sanctions levied against it, if it’s enforced by the local authorities.
Risk of doing business with someone listed in the GFIEN
If you fail to adhere to sanction filtering when carrying out your AML checks, you may end up unwittingly becoming an abettor or aiding in illegal activities. In most countries having dealings with any sanctioned business or individual is illegal.
If you’re found out, the consequences can include substantial fines or even a prison sentence, as it’s considered an AML compliance failure.
